    Could it get any worse for Boeing?Its entire fleet of 787 Dreamliners-the most technologically advanced airliner in the world-has been grounded over the risk of a battery catching fire in flight.

  After the Japanese airlines operating almost half of the Dreamliners worldwide decided they could risk it no longer,the US Federal Aviation Administration grounded all 787s in its jurisdiction. From India to Qatar,Poland to Chile and finally Ethiopia,the global fleet was taken out of action,an ignominious fate for a plane that had been so eagerly anticipated for so very long.

  According to the NHK report,the plane captain saw three alarms that prompted the emergency landing—the first alerted the pilots to smoke in the compartment containing the battery,a second noted a voltage drop in the battery and the third was related to abnormal battery charging.

  The Japan Transport Safety Board said the battery and the systems around it would be sent to Tokyo for more checks,adding there were similarities with an earlier battery fire on a 787 in Boston operated by Japan Airlines.

  This week,US and European aviation regulators said planes should be grounded while safety checks are carried out on their lithium ion batteries. The US Federal Aviation Administration and Boeing are investigating the problem.

  US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said earlier the Dreamliner would not fly again under authorities were“1,000% sure”it is safe. The US aerospace giant said it would continue to build the plane,but not deliver any until US safety officials gave their backing.

  “I have confidence the Boeing Co. will work through the issues with the 787 and that it will be a good airplane,”American Chief Executive Officer Tom Horton said in an interview yesterday,a day after the FAA acted. The third-largest U.S. airline expects to complete all of its 100 orders and options for the plastic-composite jet,with deliveries starting in 2014,Horton said.

  Japan’s share of the build—and of the profit—has grown with each successive Boeing model,from below a fifth for the 767 and a quarter for the 777 to more than a third for the 787. More than five dozen Japanese firms are among the suppliers for Boeing’s civilian and military divisions,providing 22,000 jobs—around 40% of Japan’s aerospace industry. Any switch to Airbus planes would,therefore,be bad news for Japan Inc,said an official at one of Boeing’s suppliers in Japan.“Japanese companies don’t have much presence in the Airbus supply chain,”he told Reuters,declining to be identified.

  LOT Polish Airlines SA,whose first trans-Atlantic flight with a 787 ended with the jet marooned in Chicago by the grounding,said it’s reviewing whether it can seek compensation from Boeing.
